What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government dental benefit created to help eligible Canadians access essential oral health care.
The program is:
Managed by Health Canada
Administered by Sun Life
Intended for Canadian residents without private dental insurance
Available to households with an adjusted family net income under $90,000
The CDCP helps cover part of the cost of dental care. It is not a free dental program and does not replace private dental insurance.
Eligibility and coverage decisions are determined by the federal government, not by Smile Story Dental Centre.
Who May Be Eligible for the CDCP?
You may qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan if you meet all of the following criteria:
You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
You filed your tax return for the previous year
Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000
You do not have access to dental insurance through:
An employer or a family member’s employer
Pension benefits
Student or professional organizations
Private or group dental plans
If you are unsure about your eligibility, please contact us and we will be able to help you confirm your eligibility.
Applying for the CDCP
Eligible Canadians of all ages can apply for the CDCP.
Once approved:
You will receive confirmation and member details from Sun Life
Your coverage start date will be provided
Your co-payment level will be outlined based on income
Coverage must be renewed each year to confirm continued eligibility.
Is Dental Care Free Under the CDCP?
No. The CDCP is not free dental care.
It is a government dental benefit that helps cover a portion of treatment costs. Depending on your household income, you may be responsible for a co-payment or for fees not covered by the plan.
Co-payment levels are based on adjusted family net income:
Under $70,000: no co-payment
$70,000 to $79,999: 40% co-payment
$80,000 to $89,999: 60% co-payment
Dental offices may bill their usual and standard fees. Any portion not covered by the CDCP remains the patient’s responsibility.
Dental Services That May Be Covered
When recommended by your dentist, the CDCP may help cover services such as:
Dental exams and X-rays
Preventive care, including cleanings, polishing, fluoride, and sealants
Fillings and basic restorative treatments
Root canal treatments
Gum disease treatment and periodontal care
Oral surgery, including extractions
Complete and partial removable dentures
Some treatments require pre-authorization before care can be provided.
Using Your CDCP Coverage at Smile Story Dental Centre
At Smile Story Dental Centre, we aim to make the experience as smooth and transparent as possible for CDCP patients.
Here’s what to expect:
Our team submits CDCP claims directly to the plan administrator
Patients cannot submit claims themselves for reimbursement
Treatment recommendations and coverage details are reviewed with you before proceeding
Any co-payment or uncovered portion is explained in advance whenever possible
Under the leadership of Dr. Nada Albatish, our team focuses on clear communication, patient comfort, and long-term oral health.
If You Have Other Government Dental Coverage
If you are already covered under programs such as Healthy Smiles Ontario or the Ontario Disability Support Program, you may still be eligible for the CDCP.
In these cases:
Benefits are coordinated between programs
Coverage is not duplicated
The CDCP may help reduce gaps not fully covered by provincial programs
Important Information About Private Dental Insurance
You are not eligible for the CDCP if you have access to dental insurance through work, school, pension benefits, or private plans, even if you choose not to use that coverage.
The CDCP is not intended to replace private dental insurance. Cancelling existing coverage to qualify for the CDCP is not recommended.
